On the fence: Mansur Gavriel Sunshine Yellow Interior Bucket Bag (Help Me Decide)

I originally thought I wanted a black bag. Not a bucket bag either, but a special black bag. My mind was on some sort of anonymous looking, yet quality-feeling, tote like the Petra from Everlane, but my mind was foggy, confused. Maybe it's time to buy things that aren't black, I said to myself. Mind you, it was also week #3 of 60+ hours at my crazy workplace, so imagine my surprise when I saw the hard-to-get Mansur Gavriel bucket bag on Needy Supply Co.  a) in stock, b) in tan/brown, c) with the most adorable sunshine yellow lining. I jumped on it and bought it, knowing that these are pretty much the hardest bags to get a hold of in this very moment.
The question remains: do I only want this bag because it's so hard to get, or is it a genuine thing of beauty that I'll use over and over?
Someone, anyone, please help me decide. I've been working 60+ hour weeks and my mind is jelly. Would you keep it? Would you wait and trade up for something else? What would that be?

  1. like you, i saw this bag and was like, must. have. it. then i went to zara (of all places) and tried on some of their bucket bags, and realized for me, they are tricky to get into. so i had my answer. does that mean whenever i see one i kinda look the other way? no, i still get the feelings of "ooohh puuurty!," but then i remember that it's just not me.

i did see the petra in person at an everlane open house and i probably would have grabbed one if they had the clay, kiwi, or navy (don't need another black tote!). it's a beautiful bag. hope this helps in your dilemma! xo

    1. We are on the same page. I was working late and I just pulled the trigger on impulse. Now I'm questioning my decision!

      Thanks for your input, darling.

  2. I love the color but am not sold on the shape. It also seems like the leather closure would wear from constant tying and untying (especially if you're like me and wear bags to death).

    1. I think I'm in love with the color on someone else. The shape is gorgeous, but agree, tricky!
Thank you so much for chiming in, anonymous lovely person.

  3. Honestly though, when I buy something in an attempt to shake things up, it usually ends up being an item that betrays my style so much that I end up doing nothing with it. The difficulty with this bag is that it looks so high quality and is very much in-demand, both characteristics that must be screaming "Keep it!" But can you envision getting repeated wear out of this exact one? How many of your favorite outfits can you see this bag complementing?

I don't think it’s a keeper just because it’s the antithesis (in color) of what you usually go for. Your original thought sounded good, but improve upon it. If you do decide to return, I say don’t buy a replacement that is too amorphous (no offense to the Petra) ‘cause you’ll end up trying to compensate later. That "special" factor probably means a quirk in shape, embellishments or texture.

PS - this might be biased b/c I own zero brown things, lol

    1. Ashley! You are literally the voice in my head! Thank you so much for verbalizing your comment in such a compelling way.

I completely agree. I wanted something special and thought I would break out of the norm — "you don't own a brown bag, get that one!"— but now that it's here in the flesh I really wish I just did stick with my gut and got something else black.

Even if it is safe, it's more "me."

Thank you so much for your opinion, darling.

  4. I love the color! It is very unique and also its super cool that it is a bucket bag! Im sure you will have lots of wear out of the bag. It is a bag that you don't usually see around so it think thats a plus. I feel like people would be like: "oh my gosh, cute bag! where did you get it?" So keep it!

  5. I am obsessed with this bag!!!! I have never worn a bucket bag before, so I'm not sure how practical they are, but I just love love love this one!

  6. It's a beautiful bag, especially in your photos. For me it would never work due to the reasons stated above; too cumbersome getting in and out of and re-tying it would drive me crazy. I had looked at the MG totes earlier this year (also beautiful!) and by my recollection I decided against ordering one because it had either no interior pockets or the pocket was too small... something about pockets. Also the reason why I have opted out on some of the lovely Clare Vivier totes. My work and personal phones need a safe, secure pocket.

    1. You make a good point about the functionality of the bucket shape.
I think I am regretting this purchase, so back it goes. Thank you so much for your input :)
